Venue Guide: Vancouver
The Sugar Refinery is a restaurant and venue in downtown Vancouver. They serve a fantastic pasta in a curry/white wine sauce. Drool. They can do unimaginable things with the garlic which roasts in the kitchen and takes over the room. They also host cool somewhat experimental sounding bands who take up residence in a corner. So far I’ve seen Vancouver bands Beans and p:ano play in said corner. There’s no pretentiousness and it seems to attract people like me who appreciate music more than ‘going out’.
The Brickyard is located next to Vancouver’s asphalt heroin park. So, we’re talking scary neighborhood here. That plus the cavernous room with lousy sound is enough to turn me against the venue. It seems to house the most flashy of indie scenesters, though. What’s the attraction?

Venue Guide: London
The Garage is in Islington in North London. Such cool bands as Weezer, Bikini Kill, Godspeed you Black Emperor! and Graham Coxon have graced its interior. It’s the perfect size, so always a good bet for a good time. Most of the people there are indie types who don’t really go out of their way to impress and look a little scruffy They enjoy getting drunk and pissed up on booze.
The Barfly is an indie music club, once located in the Falcon pub in Camden Town and recently relocated to the Monarch pub. A lot of up-and-comers play here as do more established bands like Marine Research and The Lollies. Gigs tend to be small but packed full of good sweaty indie kids and indie media types. They’ll all be at the bar getting a drink.
